Jayapura is the capital of Papua, Indonesia although it only has an estimated population of 400,000 people. This is a main hub for flights around Papua and has the potential to be a great transit destination.
We can pick you up from the airport and take you to Kalkote Dock to have a local boat excursion on Lake Sentani. It’s not far and there’s no need to even go into the city! This large lake is set in beautiful hilly countryside and has lots of small islands. There is even an island with a small church built near the beginning of 20th Century.
We jump onto a small boat and prepare for a 2-hour lake tour.
The activity around the lake is mostly fisherman but we visit some villages with some friendly, local people who are happy to share their traditional life. Most of the villages are built on stilts around the edges of the lake and you can see that the water is a fundamental part of their lives. The docks are a great place to watch the kids playing in the water.
We walk around and see the local people of Sentani tribe making their arts, bark painting, necklaces and a variety of handycrafts. The art is incorporated in the panels of their houses.
We stop for lunch at a local fish restaurant before visiting some of the markets for souvenir shopping.
On the way back to the airport we make a quick stop at the Cenderawasih Museum; Cenderawasih means Bird of Paradise. This exhibits a famous Asmat Totem Pole rumoured to belong to Michael Rockerfeller….as well as more traditional artifacts and some interesting tools.
Many thanks to our guest Jen for sharing her experiences in Jayapura on her way to join Damai I in Biak.
Take home more than just underwater memories.
