Indonesia’s national motto is “Unity in Diversity” and these islands are home to some of the most ancient and interesting tribal cultures on earth, such as the Dayak in Kalimantan and the Mentawai in Sumatra. Over 100 separate tribal groups survive in the province of West Papua alone; you can combine the stunning nature of the Baliem Valleywith the unique culture of the Dani tribe.
Each area has strong local art expressed in batik printing or ikat weaving and differing examples of wood carving. Not only is it interesting to watch these artisans at work with the tools they use, this is a great opportunity to buy original gifts or souvenirs.
There are temples galore to visit on Bali, the ‘Island of the Gods’ but Java can boast the oldest Buddhist Temple at Borobudur and the oldest Hindu temple at Prambanan which can both be visited during a short stay in the cultural city of Yogyakarta.
