Dive Damai is an advocate of marine conservation and with every improvement in our company we try to take this into account.
We were introduced to a Balinese based company called Avani Eco, who make sustainable alternatives to plastic products, by one of our t-shirt suppliers. Thanks Gino!
We were impressed that our t-shirt stocks arrived in these ‘I am not Plastic’ bags and we encouraged and educated our other boutique suppliers to use the same bags, which they now do. 🙂
We then started looking to replace the small, indoor, black, trash bags which we use in the cabins, onboard our boats. These “I am not Plastic’ bags are made from cassava starch and are biodegradable within months or can be recycled with paper.
On Damai’s boats we travel all over the Indonesian archipelago, to remote areas and are always concerned about the disposal of our waste. What about all the other liveaboards too? So, we contacted Jangkar, the Indonesian Liveaboard Association, and they were instantly supportive. As a result, Jangkar has organized all 40+ boats in the organization to have 100 customised, bags as a start with the hope that they will continue to use them.
So far, we are getting excellent feedback from the Indonesian liveaboards and this project is proving to be a success.
As well as the bags, Avani produces plastic-free products for the food industry like cutlery, plates and bowls and paper straws which is great in this take away culture we have.
Damai has also invested in Avani’s corn-based, bio-ponchos for our guests to use on a rainy day. These replace the petroleum based rain coats which we used to hesitate to use because of ways to dispose of them.
This is a win-win situation for everyone: we support a small Balinese business, we continue to educate the tourist industry and their suppliers in Indonesia and we produce less plastic waste, which is difficult to dispose of.
Every little helps!
