With 22nd April being Earth Day we thought it was time to give you an update on our campaign to eliminate Palm Oil products from the Damai liveaboards.
The situation with the palm oil industry has had international front page coverage since 2015 with over 100,000 reported forest fires in Indonesia causing wide-spread haze and health scares, threats to primary equatorial rainforests, threats to endemic wildlife and irreversible changes to local communties throughout the archipelago but concentrating in Sumatra, Kalimantan and Papua. Alberto Reija, the owner of both Damai I and Damai II liveaboards, who has been a pioneer in luxury liveaboard service for the last 8 years decided enough was enough and Damai as a company could no longer support the damage that this industry was doing to our beautiful country.
Damai started a campaign to eliminate palm oil products from our liveaboards and actually this was more difficult than we had first expected.
One of the first successful steps was to replace all our Dive Damai toiletries. We sourced our new palm oil free, aromatherapy products from a company in Bali called Naturasie http://www.naturasie.com/en/ . Damien was very supportive of our high standards and we finally have a therapeutic, sweet-smelling range of hand soap, shower gel, shampoo, conditioner, body lotion and massage oil.
The things that proved more difficult were in the kitchen when we started reading the ingredients on locally sourced products. So we decided to put our money where our mouth was and buy imported cooking oil and egg noodles instead of packet instant noodles, amongst other things.
I also have to say many thanks to our guests for their support in this campaign. A few of the old favourites were removed from the boats like ‘Nutella’, cookies and cheese crackers. The regular guests were initially unsure about this but after explaining why they then gave us their whole-hearted support. We couldn’t have done it without them!
The next step – We are now looking closely at our onboard cleaning products like laundry detergent. We are looking at the feasibility of only being able to source such products in Bali and the logistics of shipping such large quantities around the country and the potential negative impact of increasing our carbon footprint.
Damai believes our economic choices can make a difference to the planet without compromising our high standards of service.
Thank you for your continuing support!
