Kalimantan

In the north-eastern part of Kalimantan, the Indonesian part of Borneo, we find the archipelago of Derawan. Comprised of a marine conservation area of over one million hectares, this archipelago is home to more than 450 species of corals, and 859 species of fish, making it one of the world leaders in marine biodiversity. The archipelago hosts everything from tiny seahorses and enormous protected whales to beaches that are the largest breeding grounds for both green and hawksbill turtles.

DIVE DAMAI trips to this region focus on a select few islands, each providing its own unique experience. Sangalaki island is world-famous for its manta feeding station and beach nesting grounds where turtles come every evening to lay their eggs.

The Jellyfish lake in Kakaban is the most spectacular in Indonesia with thousands of poison-less jellies. Maratua island can surprise any diver with its massive school of barracuda, and leopard sharks found resting in the shallow lagoon. With a bit of luck, divers can encounter thresher sharks and giant marble rays in Muaras, and have close interaction with whale sharks in Talisayan. Macro lovers will glory in the diversity of bizarre critters in Derawan island.

To ensure you enjoy this unique destination in great comfort, Damai II liveaboard offers a range of trip dates and durations. Our trips are scheduled during the best time of year in the area to adjust to different guests’ profiles. This destination is even more appealing if thought of as unexplored territory that can provide opportunity to explore new reefs.

If you would like to discover more of Kalimantan, we are happy to assist you in organizing a 3 day-2 night private boat trip inside the rivers of the Tanjung Putting National Park, where you have a chance to see crocodiles and proboscis monkeys together in the wild.
